Nokia partners with Microsoft on smart phones

HTC HD7 Unlocked Global Smartphone - Window 7, 1 GHz processor, GPS, WiFi (Unlocked T-Mobile Logo)Yesterday I asked how people around while they were considering for a new mobile phones, “Did they consider Nokia phones ?”  To my surprise everyone said, “No”. My first Nokia mobile phone was Nokia 3310. I bought it because it was small, easy to use and I could play games snakes. The competitor at the time was Ericsson and Motorola.

The next time Nokia made a buzz in the market was when they came with camera in the phone. The idea of taking a picture with a phone …. that was fantastic. Sony Ericsson tried to complete with its MP3 phone but it did not appeal many.  Then Nokia N95 with a 8GB memory which allows the user to store lot of music and documents on the phone. That was also a successful. After that it was iPhone with their apps, that changed the mobile phone market.

Nokia’s Symbian OS looked like old car in hybrid car market. Nokia N8 with a HD camera was no good on Symbian OS. The feel good user experience has been missing with Nokia.

On Feb 11, 2011, Nokia and Microsoft announced partnership where the Nokia phones will be powered by Windows 7 software. Open Letter from CEO Stephen Elop, Nokia and CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft. This is like partnership of SonyErricsson whose sales went for skiing holidays.

Look how happy they look

Nokia N900 on Linux-based OS, Maemo, is an excellent phone. You can do video calling skype even before iPhone’s facetime or talk on google talk when no other phone has this feature. So I feel, Maemo would have been a much better platform to switch from Symbian. Google has invested the Linux based Android and built it reputation over three years time.

Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft, I guess, would be commercial reasons rather than technological. Mobiles based on Windows platform is yet to impress people. If I had asked people whether they considered buying a Windows phone, I would have got the same answer as Nokia !

So let’s see whether the partnership will benefit users with any innovation.
