Nokia has been the most popular mobile in last 20 years. And when we upgraded our mobile phone contracts, the preferred choice was Nokia… till the arrival of iPhone, HTC, Samsung. Earlier the main focus was on hardware, how did the phone look … the slide phone, flip phone or a small phone. Now it is about the OS of the phone … Android or Mac. The buying preference has shifted and questions people ask are, "Is a touch phone " or "will able to book my restaurant table or movies" or can I play games like PSP or does it have a sat nav. Nokia has realised it too late and it needs a magic OS to capture its market share.
So what should I do with the old Nokia phone? …. Recycle is a good option.
Did you know :
- Mobile phones are on average only used for 12 to 24 months until they are replaced by new handsets. As a result, over 100 million mobile phones are unused in Europe every year, and that number is growing.
- Do you know it's illegal to put your old handsets in household waste?
- There are estimated to be 66 million old and unused mobile phones in the UK and less than 10% of these are recycled.
- Around 24.5 million phones are upgraded each and every year … which would mean the phone mountain is potentially increasing year on year by at least 17.9 million phones!
- Phones can add to the burden of landfill and potential toxins from batteries. And plastics can leak into the ground.
- Every phone can either be re-used or recycled.
- Re-use of phones is better for the environment – no new raw materials are required, and the life of the phone is extended.
- Mobile Phone Recycling is particularly important because waste from mobile phones and other electronics can harm the environment. Recycling mobile phones is necessary because mobile phones and their accessories contain harmful substances, including Cadmium, Rhodium, Palladium, Beryllium and Lead, not to mention Nickel, Mercury, Manganese, Lithium, Zinc, Arsenic, and Copper.
