The management gurus motivate people by advising them to stay focused on the goal.  So you are like a race horse who will run the fastest till you reach your finishing line.  Read some focus quotes:

Normally I visit London for work or going to a specific place with a goal in mind. I learnt something different while wandering in London with no specific agenda.  I started observing the people, the architecture, the birds, what people are doing around and started taking pictures.  

When I have nothing to focus on, I started seeing whole picture.
