Smartphone market has been created by Apple’s iPhone. The reason they are succesful was they focussed on user experience. Nokia focussed more on handware and they were innovative at the time. They were the first to have games on phone so people can pass time. Then came graphic interface, fancy ringtones, followed by a digital camera. Those were the good times of Nokia when Nokia was the preferred choice.
But Nokia didn’t see Android coming. There were lot mobile phone manufacturers but with their own softwares. A gap in the market Google exploited.
Samsung, HTC and LG soon adopted Android OS and flooded their devices in the market. Apps became the buzz word invented by Apple (i think Firefox browser were the first to introduce it for internet browsing). To use your phone, you need an App. Even when you don’t use the phone to make a call, you are tempted to use an app!!!

The only downside of a mobile phone is after you buy it, you wait for the next release. Many people are waiting for iPhone 5 from last year. And some are waiting for iPhone 6 for their next upgrade.
