Celebrate a Google's Day

The Google Way: How One Company Is Revolutionizing Management as We Know ItGoogle's Philosophy: "The perfect search engine," says co-founder Larry Page, "would understand exactly what you mean and give back exactly what you want." When Google began, you would have been pleasantly surprised to enter a search query and immediately find the right answer. Google became successful precisely because we were better and faster at finding the right answer than other search engines at the time.

But technology has come a long way since then, and the face of the web has changed. Recognizing that search is a problem that will never be solved, we continue to push the limits of existing technology to provide a fast, accurate and easy-to-use service that anyone seeking information can access, whether they're at a desk in Boston or on a phone in Bangkok. We've also taken the lessons we've learned from search to tackle even more challenges.

In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs, and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament, greeted Zetkin's suggestion with unanimous approval and thus International Women's Day was the result.

I would like to propose "Google's Day" for the  Google's contribution made towards the internet. No one can  better explain than the women in this video.

In June 17,2008, Firefox celebrated a Guinness World Record over 8 million download of Firefox 3. Similarly, I feel, there should be a Google Day to celebrate the Google's contribution towards internet. All the people in the world should search for the words "Is Google best search engine" on the same day and at the same time. And make a new Guinness World.

Download Open Office Free Productivity Suite

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007Microsoft Office: How many one of us use fifteen percent of features of Word or claim that we use it to full potential. So why buy an MS Officesuite for our home use when we create documents or spreadsheet on Open Office productivity suite which is available for free.
As of April next year, Danish state communication will be in open formats that fulfil set principles for open standards. “My ambition is that in the future we will only communicate using open standards,” Science Minister Helge Sander told Parliament.

What does Open Format Standards mean to you ?

Open Document Format (ODF) standards, as promulgated by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), set international compatibility criteria for the electronic/digital storage of documents.

These standards recognize the importance of interoperability and intelligent information exchange and seek, for example, to ensure that office documents created today on any given computer system will be readable by other computer systems everywhere, including the technology of tomorrow.

This would allow you to choose your productivity suite and create documents in open format and send it to anyone. You are not restricted to buy MS Office, which is today the most popular productivity suite in the market to create document. I would advise Open Office applications to adopted by small / medium sized organisations / businesses,  not for profit organisations, educational institutions. Large organisations are generally sceptical to adopt open source applications but they should make feasibility studies and check how they fit into their suite of applications.

I think, large corporations should demonstrate that they are making efforts to adopt Open Document Format (ODF) standards, as promulgated by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), set international compatibility criteria for the electronic/digital storage of documents. This would influence many to recognise open document format standards and adopt them.

Internet Explorer - Should I use Chrome or Firefox or Opera

The recent warning by Federal Office for Information (BSI) Security to Germans to avoid use of all versions of Explorer has woken up those people who didn't know there exist other internet browser on this planet.

Although the choices are limited, but there 4 others which are a good fit.

My friends called me up asked me regarding Google's Chrome. Google has been in news for different reasons but it seems Chrome usage has picked up since it is a simple browser which looks like Windows Explorer.

The top five browsers in the market

1. Firefox
2. Opera
3. Chrome
4. Safari
5. Internet Explorer

Surprisingly the most beautiful, innovative and lively browser "Opera" is unknown to most. Is it because it is based in Norway ? I would expect more marketing promotions from Opera for people to know about them. Nintendo Wii has Opera as default browser. You will find Opera Mini on your mobile a very good one.

The question is whether warnings from federal authorities change people's habit or spell. Google will not benefited from exit from China but it would be making money from people who would moving to Chrome platform both on browser as well as their operating system which is scheduled to come next year.

Google has been changing its Doodles - the graphical logos that sit above the search box on the otherwise minimalist page - more regularly over the last few months.

Is Google conscious of its appearance trying to attract attention of its readers. Are they trying to make up quite often ?

Is there a lady behind change of Google appearance. How do you refer Google ? Is it a masculine or feminine.... Share your views.

I feel Google should be a female.

Lesson: You will be in public eye when you change little bit and quite often.

Kill Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 - Google Way

ShareThis

Today I got an email from Google that they would no longer support Internet Explorer 6. The email is very persuasive and usage of words is very good to make the user to switch to other browsers. I find it hard to believe people are going to upgrade from IE6 to IE8 given the bad press from China and Germany. I am highlighting the key words.

Dear Google Apps admin,

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology.  This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5.  As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010.  After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting this week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser.  We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

In 2009, the Google Apps team delivered more than 100 improvements to enhance your product experience.  We are aiming to beat that in 2010 and continue to deliver the best and most innovative collaboration products for businesses.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

The Google Apps team

PS: Google ignores Opera browser which has innovative features. Is it because Opera browser is not an American company ?

Opera Mini browser crosses 50 million active users

ShareThis
Opera Mini, the world’s most popular mobile browser, has crossed the 50 million unique monthly users mark in January 2010. This milestone proves the popularity of Opera Mini compared to other mobile browsers, as users seek out the Opera Mini experience over other options by downloading it on their mobile devices.
The press release from Opera is hardly covered by leading IT news websites.
-----------

I have migrated from my Blackberry browser to Opera Mini on my Blackberry Storm as it provides a good browsing experience. I even feel Blackberry should stop spending money on their browser development and make Opera Mini their default browser.

The big questions for Opera as a company are :
  • How many people know about Opera as a company ?
  • Does anyone know it is an European company ?

Take for example when you ask people about companies  Nokia, BMW, SAP, Mercedes, Volvo, Mersk, Philips, Nestle, TomTom and where they belong like, you are more likely to get responses where they belong to and what are their products.

Ask about Opera - most of people have not heard about it. Leave alone where they are from you.

The internet browser is dominated by American IT companies. Firefox has made inroads in the market mainly due Microsoft IE's lack of development and users were moved by the concept of open source software.  The advantage  of open source, there is a huge pool of developers working for you and promoting the product. Apple's iPhone has become popular because of their big Apps availability.  Now Nokia's Symbian OS has also joined the bandwagon of open source.

Opera browser has been innovative till now. But to attract users to their fold, Opera's strategy should be to make their browsers open source and market themselves as browser from Europe. Then they would get noticed.

Why I chose Drupal CMS for iwaant.com

ShareThis

Pro Drupal Development, Second Edition

I was reading reviews on Drupal vs Wordpress vs Joomla when I was deciding on which solution would be better suited for iwaant.com . I started with Wordpress since it is most popular platform used by leading professional bloggers. I bought a hosting package from GoDaddy and started using Wordpress. I was very happy with variety of free themes being available and ease of installation of plugins with plugins like All in one SEO, related posts etc. More important everything happens automatically with press of a button.

The latest posts appears on the frontpage of the blog and the contents were managed using tags and categories. Things were going fine and then I realised - the menu options did not have the drop-down functions. As I wanted to developed concepts on my website, more questions arose.

  • If I write on varied topics, how do I organise the contents in relevant manner. My Management Accountant Blog is popular but it is difficult to organise information in a flexible manner.
  • Professional blogger have come up with e-books and turned it into revenue earner. How would I organise an e-book on wordpress.
  • Website like Mashable.com has multiple writers. Antonio Lupetti of woorkup.com moved from blogger to Wordpress. Now he had multiple writers too.
  • How do I engage more readers on iwaant without making them writers or commentators - without actively involved in moderation. My experience on CMA India Portal in dealing with users made me think, it would be a good idea to have a forum later. Problogger.net now has Problogger.com for a forum.
  • Will wordpress have collaborative tool like Wiki in future.

So questions like these made me think to search for a better solution for www.iwaant.com

What did I do to arrive at my decision

  1. Read Online reviews : I searched on google with search words Wordpressvs Joomlavs Drupal. Which CMS you should choose - Tim Stiffler-Dean has explained pro and cons of each solution. Compass Design gives a matrix of costs suggesting Joomla as a economical option and CMSwire on favorable developer experience on Joomla. Which one is right - Alledia gives comparison between Drupal and Joomla and gives favourable review on Drupal.  There was view on many forums that Drupal is very techie and learning curve is steeper than Joomla.
  2. Free Hosting sites: Initially I created a sandbox on free site DrupalCafe to learn Drupal and understand the designing the site. I found it extremely difficult to relate Site building with Site Configuration, menus with content management. I spent lot of time and efforts to know about user friendly url without a success. At that point of time, I came to a conclusion - Drupal is for hardcore programmers and not for me. I moved on. I registered on free site freejoomlas.com and tested my design and concepts. Joomla is pretty easy to learn and design. Free templates are available and there are lot of extentions available. So opted for Joomla.
  3. Configured Joomla on GoDaddy.com: I installed Joomla on my Wordpress hosting account and started building iwaant.com. As I was adding various topics, I was not finding Joomla flexible. E.g. You write on a Digital Camera with 3X Optical zoom and 12 Mega Pixel. There is no easy way to use two categories for the topic. This limits the search options both the users and web designer. Probably the users will not find website friendly and my choose not to visit it again. Moreover I found, my website was little bit slow to load and this experience was not encouraging. So I had to go back to my drawing board.
  4. Revisited Drupalcafe: Since it was difficult to understand drupal documentation, I visited some of their showcase websites to understand their design and then related the concepts and configuration of drupal. I did not mind url path with the naming convention node 5, node 6 etc till one day I accidentally entered few words in the create content - url path settings and published it. It was a eureka moment for me as I was able to see a user friendly url. Then I was able to relate Navigation - > Menu - Blog / Page / Story -> url on Drupal. The site is very quick to load and there are lot of modules available to use.
  5. Installed Drupal on GoDaddy.com: I removed Joomla application on my Godaddy account and installed Drupal. When I learnt the finer points of Drupal, it now looks to be a very powerful and user friendly content management system. Unlike Wordpress or Joomla, you have to use FTP to install modules but it has all the features to make it collaborative. It should be able to handle large number of users as my website iwaant.com grows.
I chose drupal over others for following reasons
  1. It allows unlimited category levels, tagging and categorization. You can also create multiple types of content, each with different features.
  2. The website is quick to load and it is SEO friendly. (Contents published on Blogger is quick on search engine results. Drupal site would take time. Now I am not that bothered about SEO, as I believe content would bring the users back).
  3. Drupal has the features for blog, pages, story which combines Wordpress and Joomla together.
  4. Drupal meets the needs of different types of web sites from community to news portals, from corporate sites to educational institutions, from media sites to international sites. And I believe when iwaant.com grows, we are fully geared to cater to the needs of the users without huge investment.
  5. Just like Wordpress, Drupal has a face and founder Dries Buytaert who is excited on his creation - Drupal. His open source baby which he and other developers made it.
